Pupils and staff visited Tanzania as part of the True Adventure scheme. Both pupils and staff experienced physical and mental challenges which included trekking, diving and helping within the local community
Pupils trekked through the Amani forest which they found fascinating, walking through communities that have no luxuries or money but have become self-sufficient and survive by taking from the forest for food and shelter. Watching the dinner being harvested Tanzanian style was an education in innovation. All groups worked with a community for up to a week helping them in the classrooms, around the school with maintenance projects and establishing gardens.
Pupils spent a day in the classroom and a day in the pool before heading out to dive in Zanzibar. With warm clear waters and a variety of sea life on display, this experience could only be described as magical.
A day was spent with the Maasai warriors on the edge of the Rift Valley, pupils and staff joined in with various activities such as dancing, and identifying giraffe poo as well as looking at their living areas.
Finally the safari in Tarangire National Park was incredible. Pupils were all able to get up close to lions, elephants, wilderbeest, giraffes, vultures, zebras and monkeys. Camping in the park at night and trying to avoid the hyenas on the way to the toilet block was a good way to introduce bladder control!
A truly amazing experience, and we look forward to the next True Adventure.
