This year’s Speech Day and prize giving took place in the Sports Hall on Friday 29 June and it was attended by around 900 guests, including pupils, parents, and governors of the school

Speech Day includes a review of the year, made by girls and boys who highlight both individual and team successes in academic and extra curricular activities. Beth Dent, Charlie Hughes, Camilla Vernon-Stroud, and Archie Thorpe presented the Junior School review. Lexy Avery, Simon Eastwood, Charlotte Mountford, and Anthony Vakis did the Middle School review, while Millie Atherton, Millie Frost, Lewis Klein, and Jonathan Reid focused on Senior School. They presented a colourful snapshot of a very busy and fulfilling year at Denstone.

After this, some of the cast of this year’s school play, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, performed a medley of songs. It was a wonderful musical interlude in which the following pupils took part: Ollie Bailey, Tom Cox, Harriet Duke, Al Giovannelli, Alfie Harris, Morgan James, Bradley Rogers, Tom Lukeman, and Emily Wainwright. Captains of School, Sephy Evans and Tom Lukeman, also made speeches in which they thanked teachers, parents and friends for their years at Denstone.

This year the prizes were presented by David Derbyshire, the Headmaster who is retiring after 21 years at Denstone. At the end of the afternoon, he and Viv Derbyshire were invited on stage to receive gifts in appreciation for their sixty five terms service to the school. Then, David Derbyshire invited the Upper Sixth Form onto stage and together they sang a loud rendition of the classic ‘My Way’ to bring to a close a vibrant, memorable and colourful Speech Day 2018.
