On Saturday 31 August, the Medical Centre team comprising of Ange Smith, Gill Lear, Michelle Edge and Bobbie Rees took part in the Race The Sun challenge in the Lake District. This involved a 25.5 mile cycle to the foot of Helvellyn followed by a climb up Helvellyn. With pretty horrendous conditions, strong winds and rain made this quite scary at times creating difficult walking conditions for the team.

After the mountain climb there was a break in the weather for them to cycle down to Lake Thirlmere (approx 2.5 miles) in order for them to kayak a course along the Lake. With mixed sun and showers for the final 25.5 mile cycle to the finish. They had fabulous support from former school nurse Liz Ogle and school counsellor, Kathy Swords who fed them, cheered them on at every changeover point and then met them at the finish with a well-deserved glass of prosecco!

The whole challenge took 11hrs and 10 minutes. The Denstone Dollies were 1 of only 2 all-female teams out of about 25 teams of 4 and they came in ahead of several of the all-male teams (they are still waiting for the official results). At present they have raised over £2000 for Action Medical Research for Children.
