Sports in the Prep

From Prep 3 to Prep 6, our pupils participate in traditional team sports, including rugby, hockey, netball, and cricket. Across the academic year, 147 teams compete in fixtures against local independent and state schools. We also take part in high-calibre tournaments further afield, testing ourselves against top schools. Notably, we are the current Staffordshire U11 Girls Hockey Champions and look forward to defending our title this March. Our Prep 5 boys recently excelled at The Elms U10 Rugby Festival, winning every match against formidable opponents.

The Prep is proud to host its own tournaments and festivals, fostering a spirit of competition and camaraderie. This March, we will host our second U10 netball tournament, while July will see our all-day cricket event with 16 participating schools. Last year, our talented cricket team clinched victory in this tournament.

Our dedicated Prep sports staff work closely with the Directors of Rugby, Hockey, Netball, and Cricket from the Senior School, ensuring that coaching is of the highest standard. This collaboration allows talented pupils to be identified early and nurtured as part of Denstone College’s development programme. Pupils also benefit from regular swimming lessons, often led by College staff, and our strongest swimmers are invited to join the Swim Squad, training alongside Senior School pupils.

We have recently introduced Sixth Form pupils from the College’s first teams to help coach Prep pupils. These sessions exemplify our ethos of ‘One School,’ with younger pupils inspired by outstanding role models. After-school clubs expand opportunities further, offering not just traditional sports but also activities like golf, dance, and climbing.

Our Prep pupils enjoy access to excellent facilities, including a swimming pool, two full-size Astros, cricket nets, an athletics track, a golf course, and a climbing wall. This ensures every child has the chance to explore and excel in an unparalleled array of sporting opportunities.
